Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma – differences and similarities
Both Hodgkin's disease (sometimes referred to as Hodgkin's Lymphoma) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a cancer that originated from a type of white blood cells known as lymphocytes, an important component of the immune system. Both of these cancers can cause the same symptoms, but the condition itself is different. The difference between Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was made upon the examination of materials of cancer (biopsy or tumour tissue aspiration). Abnormal cell types identified in the sample to determine whether lymphoma is classified as Hodgkin's disease or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are far more common than Hodgkin's disease. In the United States, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer among men and the fifth most common cancer among women. Furthermore, the incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are rising steadily over the past few decades. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is actually a heterogeneous group of more than 30 types of cancer with the differences in microscopic appearance and biological characterization of malignant lymphocytes. Different types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma also had differences in their biological behavior (such as a tendency to grow aggressively) that affect the overall prospects of the patient (the prognosis).
Hodgkin's disease is much more common than non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and accounts for only about 1% of all cancers in the United States the incidence of this cancer has actually declined in recent years, in contrast to the increase in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease confirmed by visualizing the tissue samples using a microscope. When a biopsy of a cancer cell contains a certain type of cell called the Reed-Sternberg, lymphoma is classified as Hodgkin's disease.
Both Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can occur in people of all ages, but the risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma increases with age, with most patients being diagnosed at the age of 60 years. Hodgkin's disease occurs most often in two different groups: young people between 15 and 40 years (most often in the age range of 20-30) and people who are 55 years or older at the time of diagnosis.
Symptoms of both types of lymphoma include swollen lymph nodes without the pain that arises, and further symptoms depending on the location and extent of the (spread) of cancer. Hodgkin's lymphoma is more likely to start in the lymph nodes in the upper body (such as in the armpits, neck, or chest), but both types of lymphoma can be found anywhere in the body. Both types of lymphoma can also be linked to the common symptoms of weight loss, fever, and night sweats.
Prognosis and treatment of all lymphomas is very dependent on the exact type and characterization of malignant lymphocytes, the characteristics of the growth and location of the tumor, the extent of the tumor has spread at the time of diagnosis, and the age and overall status the patient's health. Both radiation therapy and various chemotherapy drugs have been used successfully in the treatment of both Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. New treatments are being developed for certain forms of lymphoma, including treatment using biological medicines, such as antibodies that target specific lymphocytes called B cells.
